Today's random pub of the day is... Peter Kavanagh's Liverpool
Address: 2-6 Egerton Street, Liverpool, Merseyside, L8 7LY [map]

I'd heard things about this pub, that it was a great olde worldy pub with strange and curious interior, rooms filled to the brim with all sorts of little nik-naks, radios dangling from the ceilings, an eclectic mix of allsorts filling every space possible, with a bar in the hall with two large rooms either side, there were old murals painted on the walls many moons ago.
I'd also heard this was in what could be deemed a slightly ropey area, or at least nearby, I'm not too familiar with Liverpool and to me the surrounding areas were reminiscent of some areas of West London. The part of town I know fairly well was only a stroll back, so I wasn't too fazed by this tale.
I enjoyed a couple of pints of Leeds Pale, Saturday teatime and it wasn't bad at all.

FORTHCOMING FILMS WORTH A GANDER

FOUR LIONS
Director: Chris Morris
Cast: Adeel Akhtar, Arsher Ali, Kavyan Novak, Nigel Lindsay, Riz Ahmed
Released 7th May
Chris Morris' (The Day Today/Brass Eye) feature length debut FOUR LIONS is a comedy farce about four idiotic homegrown jihadi terrorists. If his usual work is anything to go by and given the subject matter this is sure to be both funny and controversial no doubt.

THE DISAPPEARANCE OF ALICE CREED
Director : J Blakeson
Cast: Gemma Arterton, Martin Compston, Eddie Marsan

Released 30th April
The Disappearance of Alice Creed is a kidnap thriller, notable for only featuring three members of cast Gemma Arterton (Quantum Of Solace), Martin Compston (Sweet Sixteen) and Eddie Marsan (Happy Go Lucky). A good cast it is though in another directorial debut - this time from J Blakeson.

THE BAD LIEUTENANT : PORT OF CALL NEW ORLEANS
Director : Werner Herzog
Cast: Nicolas Cage, Eva Mendes, Val Kilmer
Released 21st May
The fact this is a remake/sequel/follow up, has one of them naff double-barrelled titles and seems to have taken ages to come out over here would suggest this is a dud compared to the original from Abel Ferrara with Harvey Kietel on fine form. The fact that Werner Herzog is in the directors chair did add kudos. I managed to see this some months back and found it was anything but, in fact I thought it was a highly enjoyable film with a welcome return to form for Nicolas Cage who stars as a 'bad' cop - after badly injuring his back whilst rescuing someone during the onslaught of 'hurricane Katrina' he becomes addicted to prescription drugs then onto the harder stuff adding to his downfall.

TETRO
Director : Francis Ford Coppola
Cast: Vincent Gallo, Maribel VerdĂș, Alden Ehrenreich
Released 25th June
Francis Ford Coppola's new film which is also his first original screenplay since The Conversation - TETRO starring Vincent Gallo is a bittersweet tale about two brothers and is already gaining some ruch praise. Strangely it's out on DVD across the puddle next month. Bennie travels to Buenos Aires to find his long-missing older brother, a once-promising writer who is now a remnant of his former self. Bennie's discovery of his brother's near-finished play might hold the answer to understanding their shared past and renewing their bond.

AND Brighton Rock due out later this year looks promising.

The eye catching poster is clearly based on A Clockwork Orange. A remake from Rowan Joffe that early on suggests it could be half decent which is apparently more based on the book from Graham Greene than the 1947 film with Richard Attenborough. Interestingly it's been moved forward by 30 years to take place in height of the Mods V Rockers era. Starring Sam Riley (Control) in the sadistic Pinkie role. Also features Helen Mirren, John Hurt and Steve Evets. Out some time in August.

THE CROPPER SHOPPER

The Roy Cropper Shopper - OUT NOW

Something a little different here and maybe not to everyone's taste admittedly, but we like it. It's tongue in cheek and yet pretty useful. Featuring 2 designs : the nod and the wink to Half Man Half Biscuit with "EGGS, BREAD, CIGS, MILK" from their Nove on the Sly track from the Trouble over Bridgewater album. Also our 'CASCO' Anarchy bag that looks familiar but I guess that's purely coincidental!
